SIPOC Explained With Examples

SIPOC is the simplest, fastest way to map any process on a single page — and the best first step before you automate anything. Here's how to build one in ten minutes.

What SIPOC stands for

SIPOC is an acronym for the five parts of any process: Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers. It gives you a one-page “aerial photo” of a process — where it starts, where it ends, and who's involved — without drowning in detail.

SIPOC vs COPIS — fill it backwards

COPIS is the same diagram filled in reverse, starting from the Customer. You ask “what does the customer actually want?” first, then work back. This keeps the process anchored to real value instead of internal habit.

How to fill it in (COPIS order)

  1. Customers — who receives the result?
  2. Outputs — what exactly do they get?
  3. Process — 5–7 main steps (stay high-level).
  4. Inputs — what's needed to start?
  5. Suppliers — who provides those inputs?

A worked example: e-commerce order fulfillment

Suppliers: customer, warehouse, courier. Inputs: online order, stock levels, shipping data. Process: receive order → pick → pack → ship → confirm. Outputs: delivered parcel + invoice. Customers: the end buyer.

In ten minutes you can see the whole flow, the hand-offs, and where things wait — which is exactly where the 8 wastes hide.

Why SIPOC comes before AI

You can't automate a process you can't see. SIPOC defines the boundaries so you know what to automate and what to leave alone. It's why it's the first tool in AILEAN's readiness report, and a core part of any AI readiness assessment.
